30-Day Angel of Darkness Challenge Day 17: Should Crystal Dynamics Have Continued the AoD Trilogy?
In yesterday's challenge question we talked about how and if the Angel of Darkness trilogy should have continued. Today we revisit that idea. Do you think Crystal Dynamics should have continued the AoD trilogy before moving on to their own?
Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness render made with XNALara by Raidergale.
I don't. I think it would have been wonderful if Core Design had been able to finish their trilogy, but it's not fair to expect one developer to take over another's work. Each team needs to do what interests them and gets them fired them up for the job, even if that means leaving some loose ends.
Even though Core messed up, Tomb Raider was still theirs (and Eidos') to begin with and I think they did a good job with AoD. Core should have finished the 3-parter and paid attention to the details that were clearing screaming to be included.
I have to disagree and say yes, I mean, it would have been a similar idea but through another developer's eyes. Although I don't think they should have done it right after they took the franchise, because they needed to adapt to that work, and release some games that they envisioned. Only after they would understand how the franchise would work and would be able to continue the fantastic series!
Good point, Jorge. I didn't think about it as being a possible learning experience for Crystal. I certainly agree with you on that aspect. I'm just not sure if they would have adopted the style of their predecessor or just messed it up further. I guess we'll never know. But I keep hoping they'll come around and realize that story is important but it's not everything. More complex levels tell little mini-stories in themselves. Also, many players don't want things to be too linear and too easy. I think we agree on that. :)
Thinking a bit about this, my answer is no. Even though Core screwed up with AoD (it's not their fault, BTW.), it was them who should've continued. After all, it was their project! It was born with them and it should've been finished with them. Not "died" with them...
I agree with Alexadria. O.K. some bits felt like 'work in progress' but it was the last time I could save my game the moment before DEATH and have another go from there. all I've seen since is better GPX. worse still, I liked TR because violence was minimal or almost comical but now it's just another shooter game. Lara Croft IS dead, long live lara croft, (or is that her yonger sister/love child?).

ReplyDeleteI am answering this with a strong no.

DeleteYes, I guess the games now are easier than what we were used to, and we can always dream that Crystal will make the AoD sequel :)
