Lately I've been replaying Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light with my buddy Treeble, whom some of you may know from the Eidos Forums and TRF. We've been having a blast, and it got me thinking about future co-op or multi-player options for the series.
For most of us, Tomb Raider is unequivocally about solitary exploration, and although there has been a trend toward more online and multi-player interactions, the developers at Crystal Dynamics have confirmed there will be no multi-player in the upcoming game.
What do you think? Would you like to see another multi-player game added to the franchise? If so, should it be a sequel to Guardian of Light, a co-op mode for the usual Tomb Raider adventure, some sort of MMO set in the Tomb Raider universe, or an entirely new type of game?
P.S. A few people have asked if it's OK to comment on past days' topics. Absolutely! If you have something to add, you're welcome to comment here or on our Facebook page. You can even respond to the 2011 Challenge topics if you like.
I believe any game called Tomb Raider that wants to be true to the spirit of the series should be a solo gig. Even Lara's headset and remote companions in Legend, Underworld, and to a lesser extent Chronicles, made me cringe. That said, I enjoy Guardian of Light immensely, especially the co-op game. It's structured differently and not meant to be a Tomb Raider adventure. So, as I mentioned in my comment on Day 9, I'd love to see future sequels to that game perhaps with different companions for Lara each time.
ReplyDeletei really did not like GOL. i tried the demo on my xbox and idk it wasn't what i thought it would be.
ReplyDeletestill they should definetly create anniversary editions or the other tr classics. just perhaps not make anymore multiplayer but in saying that everyone has they're own opinions and i allow anyone to disagree with me if so.
No, definetly not. It's not that I didn't like GOL, but it isn't Tomb Raider. The game is very different from the others and doesn't when I play it, I don't feel well like when I play a real TR game. I played it because I wanted to know how the game is, but before I even installed, I knew I wouldn't like it because I don't like that type of games. Although, there are many TR (and non-TR) fans who enjoyed this game very much, but in my opinion, future TR games should be the chalangeing as the Classics were and more like it.
ReplyDeleteNo, not really.
ReplyDeleteLike Stella, I did really enjoy Guardian of Light. I actually think that it's the best Lara-related game that Crystal Dynamics has made. Yes, the view is different and may seem to not encourage exploration. Yes, it's very action heavy. BUT, the level design is often a lot more creative than many of the other levels from modern action-adventure games, including other TR games by Crystal Dynamics. Also, although I am usually not a fan of action in action-adventure games, I think that Guardian of Light offers the best action in any Tomb Raider game, because it's actually engaging and well developed, in contrast to most other action-adventure games, including Tomb Raider, the the action is just mostly redundant. So, would I like to see a Guardian of Light sequel? Absolutely!
ReplyDeleteWould I like to see more co-op? Not necessarily. I've always been a solo player. Even Guardian of Light, I have played solo, and then I also played the first co-up level entirely on my own, switching between the two controlers. Actually, you know what? Any fans of Portal 2 out here? Yeah, I played the ENTIRE co-up levels solo, switching between controlers! I know, it's crazy, but I just want to experience and experiment on my own. I like to figure out things on my own and be proud of it. I like to be able to spend time as much as I need to to explore a level and try out different things. So no, I for one don't care for co-up.
It was OK in Guardian of Light, not as an official Tomb Raider game but as a side game. The only trouble is, I had no one to play it with.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it would work that well, but I think it would be interesting if Lara had a long lost little sister. I think that could be an interesting dynamic. To have Lara, after years of only taking care of herself and doing it well, have to take care of a younger sibling. I don't know if it would work in a multiplayer, where you would play the sister or what, but it just intrigues me a bit.
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that the headset was suppose to develop Lara as a human being right Stella? Core was too busy running the franchise into the ground to develop Lara properly so the headset and how she interacted with people was necessary.
ReplyDeleteI think they should make a sequel to Guardian of Light but I'd like them to perhaps make an arcade game that plays like a normal Tomb Raider with Co-op in it as a spin off just to see if it works. Could be really awesome especially if Lara and her Co-op partner had good chemistry and the story was good. But I agree it shouldn't have 'Tomb Raider' in the title. Lara Croft and the Co-op adventure of awesomeness!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy very much GoL too, but I only play in solo mode (I don´t find any partner to play in the co-op mode). I don´t care about a co-op TR game, but if it is necesary to keep the franchise running, it will be welcome.
ReplyDeleteThe canadian Internet system apparently does not have the necessary bandwidth for multi-player games. Moderators consequently don't want canadians, because moderators currently can't get paid for their guardianships of canadians.
ReplyDeleteI haven't played GoL yet, but I would like to play the other TR games in multiplayer (somehow) and obviously see more new games in multiplayer. Multiplayer is always fun. My childhood best friend and I spent most of our younger years taking turns on TR1 anyway. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking of an MP for TR for years and how it would work, I thought of co-op which was well done in GOL in my opinion, also a Capture the Flag style game I think would be fun :)
ReplyDeleteOnly for future games similar to GoL. An emphatic no for the main series.
ReplyDeleteToo many games nowadays focus on multi-player and completely disregard the single player experience. You can blame the Xbox and their fans for that horrible turn of events.
I would like a thing like in the new Assassins Creed game, where you can play a side mission with friends. It would also be nice if the multiplayer in Rise had split screen.
