Today Game Informer unveiled the cover for its upcoming Tomb Raider issue and hinted at more news to come.
According to the news item by GI staff writer and Lara Croft fan/cosplayer Meagan VanBurkleo, the next Tomb Raider will indeed be an updated origin story.
"Rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn't so much a choice as an act of necessity, according to Crystal Dynamics. Drastic measures were needed. To build an entirely fresh Lara—a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly—they must break her first. In this new adventure—simply titled Tomb Raider—a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive."
For more info, including two Tomb Raider cover treatments, check out the unfolding story at Game Informer's Tomb Raider Hub and pick up the January issue when it hits newsstands on December 11. Or watch this space, follow me on Twitter or join the discussion on my Facebeook page.
I think Lara looks so beautiful and realistic in this new render!!! I LOVE it!!!! Can't wait to find out more about this game! I was a little apprehensive about this reboot but now I'm more excited then ever about this new game!!!
ReplyDeleteso is it tomb raider origins or lara croft reborn? anyway it looks ssssssoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!! but there is one thing bugging me why all the talk of her being sexy she looks no more than a teenager.
ReplyDeleteYou will have to let me know what you think of the story Stella! I'm eager to have other TR fans read it! It was an undertaking to write :P
ReplyDelete@Marta: Me too! I think it looks really cool. I just hope it's not too scary for me. I'm not normally an M-rated kind of gal.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: So far they're saying it's just called "Tomb Raider". That's going to cause some confusion, I'm sure.
@Meagan: I thought it was great, and I can't wait to see what you have for us next! I'm a long-time GI subscriber, and I've followed all your TR and Guardian of Light reportage. It was obvious you're a fan even before I saw your site with the cosplay pix.
I've had dozens of comments on my Facebook page cross-posting this morning. So far nobody's dissed the article at all, though some fans are up in arms about another reboot. They like the original Lara and fear change. ;)
I think I might be able to tolerate a reboot if Lara remains British. If not, I'm probably out. Fingers Crossed.
ReplyDeleteOh, boy! I didn't even think of that. I can't imagine they'd go so far as to change her nationality. But I agree; that could be a deal-breaker.
ReplyDeleteLara has survived a plane crash, and now a wreck.
ReplyDeletethis poor girl. hahaha
Crystal D. really wants to end the Lara Croft of Core D. ;(
But this game, with current technology, it will be a great game
Tomb Raider Forever ♥
It is going to take some time to win core fans over. I was very skeptical at first - I didn't think Lara needed an overhaul. But after seeing it several times the past few months, it clicked. I think this will be the Lara that we want, done to the level of quality we deserve :)
ReplyDeleteOh, trust me, culling the story down was HARD. I cut nearly 5000 characters to make the damn thing fit. I could talk forever about Lara :P
is m rated confirmed?
ReplyDeletehope lara croft doesnt become one of those games that slot into all pegi catogories(violence, bad language, horror, sex/nudity, drugs, discrimination and gambling.)i never have been fond of games like that. e.g grand theft auto. call of duty is far enough for me.
So let's see what they've got planned for this time around, emotional trauma to be experienced.. how does that fall into gameplay frames?
ReplyDeleteTRU was advertised as something new, but it wasn't THAT new at all. Graphics were cool and looked like a million dollars / euros, but still..
Well I'll buy my copy when it's out, be the new TR release shabby or not. As if I REALLY had a choice..?
I love the new Lara, she's beautiful!! Does anyone know if they're going to keep the guns? It's not TR without them!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they'll be releasing more info little by little to keep us on the edges of our seats. I always liked the levels where Lara loses her weapons and has to get them back. I'm hoping she'll start out with nothing in this game and end up kicking major ass by the end.
ReplyDeleteI just hope they keep up the same great mix of combat, puzzles and platforming that they finally hit again with LCGOL. A traditional survival-horror style game wouldn't necessarily include the puzzling and controller gymnastics we've come to love.
But I'm *much* more optimistic now that Meagan says she's a convert. She's seen a lot more of the game than we have, and I can't wait to read her next update.
i hope they keep that balance too.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the new face, it's nice to see Lara with some genuine looking scars and cuts (I think the worst injuries we've seen her with is ur... mud?) hopefully CD will keep her with some scars in the later games (we all love realism, right? :D)
ReplyDeleteThis should be pretty awesome, though, I'm just hoping the 'horror' elements aren't too macabre, I've been known to run to bathrooms when watching Saw and the likes :D
Reading the GI article really got me stoked for this :) It looks intense. I'm curious to see whether or not CD ties this origin reboot in with the plot arc for their previous 3 games (not directly, obviously, but maybe giving us shades of things to come). Lara's character is someone I've always admired for simply being who she is: intelligent, strong both physically and mentally, a bearer of some major skillz (I wish I could fight and shoot that well), just an all around bad-a$$, for lack of a better word. I've always wondered how she got that way. I'm eager to see CD's take on her development.
ReplyDeleteOf course, TR as it has been up to now will always have a place in my heart. Revisits will be frequent, as always.
And I agree with Alice about the horror aspect! Not a horror fan. If it's too nightmarish, I may not replay it as much as I would otherwise!
I've been a fan for a year now and am quite addicted, but I'm under-age and am afraid of the rumors out and about that this game would be horror/sandbox, putting an end to my love of TR.
