Guardian of Light concept art
(click for larger image)It features both single- and co-op arcade-style action, in which players control Lara and a new Mayan tribesman character as they fight their way through ancient tombs and temples in pursuit of—you guessed it—a mystical artifact. As the screenshots below suggest, there are hordes of enemies, traps and puzzles galore, and naturally plenty of challenging platforming.
Players who prefer a more traditional raiding experience needn't worry. Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that another Tomb Raider—the next in the series of immersive action-adventure games we've come to know and love—is in development concurrently. Guardian seems to be a smaller side project designed to take the series in some new directions and maybe even draw in fresh fans from other genres. Notice the conspicuous absence of "Tomb Raider" from its title.
It may not be Lara's next big adventure, but Guardian of Light looks like a fun way to fill a few hours while we wait for it.

We can only wait and see.Myself,I'm not to keen on this type of gameplay it seems to "distant"
ReplyDeleteHi Stella!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like it'll be fun, though the "main" TR games are best.
I tend to agree with you, Coyote, but I like the fact that they're working on two games--something light and hopefully fun to keep us busy and another, more substantial game to look forward to later on. IMO, that's much better than trying to crank out a big game every year. That can only lead to disaster, as we've seen previously. ;)
ReplyDeleteWe should be pretty busy with Indiana Jones's two parts and a couple of games for Lara. Where will I find the time.
ReplyDelete...I heard a rumor that 'Tomb Raider:Origins'might be coming out later this year...could this be true...apparently it takes place right after 'Revelations'...these rumors have to stop teasing me!
ReplyDeleteI assume that this would be for the PC, and not the PSP. Been keeping my PSP busy with regular Indiana Jones - Staff of Kings, Untold Legends - Brotherhood of the Blade, and God of War. Dave A.
ReplyDeleteWell, so far no there's been news about which platforms Guardian of Light will be for. One would assume PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and/or PSP, but I don't know what if exclusive agreements they're working on. I know a lot of people were disappointed about the Underworld bonus levels only being available on Xbox Live.
ReplyDeleteAlso no projected date for TR9/Origins/whatever-it's-going-to-be-called. As soon as I hear anything, I'll post it here. :)
I've actually heard it is for a few platforms and the PC.
ReplyDeleteInteresting is that this side project was made with the same engine as the more recent TR games...I guess the camera was just pulled far away. Reminds me of Diablo (a very good thing), and also of an RPG in general.
Indeed, though I was thinking of Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, or one of the other old-school RPGs from Black Isle--which were of course inspired by Diablo. This could be a very good thing, provided it's handled well.
ReplyDeleteI am SO glad to read that a "real TOMB RAIDER" game is in the works along with this side game. The Guardian of Lights does not look like something I would enjoy much. (everything looks so small) not my cup of tea. Can't wait for the next TR PS3 game. That's what I really want.
