It's definitely a new look and feel for the long-running series, but developer Crystal Dynamics' Karl Stewart continues to reassure fans that the new game will cleave to the key Tomb Raider traditions. In a recent interview with The Daily, he said, "It still boils down to those pillars: the combat aspect, the exploration, the puzzles, the dynamic traversal and movement in the world. And now, the smart resourcefulness of this young character. . . . You have to take those leaps of faith in order to create something new and different and exciting. We're setting a new foundation, but we're not forgetting who [Lara] is."

I'm struck for words... If it looks that amazing as a YouTube video, I can't even register how it'll look as a game.
ReplyDeleteBut Autumn 2012? I think it's very very early to release an advert like that. I can see myself getting extremely impatient already XD
If the graphics, sound and storyline are as good as the trailer suggests, I think this Tomb Raider might be a real hit and see the comeback of Lara Croft to her former glory.
ReplyDeleteThe graphics are a amazing! It has come a long way since TR1. I really don't want to wait until Autumn 2012, but it is probably better if they take their time to make the game perfect and avoid any bugs in the game.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who's player TR from the very first one, this is just jaw-dropping. If they can actually implement the "go anywhere, not just highlighted ledges etc," it will be brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThe obvious next question is "When is the 3-D version dus ..... ?"
This looks amazing and the game has so improved from the begining. But how can we wait so long!?
ReplyDeleteThis looks simply amazing! Fall huh? Come on summer - get over with already!
ReplyDeleteThe graphics look good! But I cannot make a judgement on how the game plays for the average player. It would take a demo to make a judgement!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!,its a heck of a long time to wait but I'm sure it'll be worth it.Lets hope this game puts lara back on top where she deserves to be,there is nothing in this life I look forward to more than a good sesh on raider.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments, everyone. Alice, I agree it's a long time to wait, but I agree with Anonymous in that I'm willing if it means the game will be better and we'll be seeing more previews along the way.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing it will be a while before we see a demo, since that usually doesn't happen until the game is almost ready to go. Still, I agree with the second Anonymous poster that the actual gameplay will make or break it. If the mechanics are frustrating, even the best graphics won't help. Still, based on what little we've seen so far, I'm optimistic....
It definately increased my desire/longing for Eidos to do a CG Tomb Raider movie, that's for sure. As far as an advert goes: It's amazing. Gives a good look at the central character (Lara), gives a great sense of the overall vibe/theme of the story (survival), and the music was perfect for the accompanying visuals. VERY well made. Whoever worked on that knows their stuff and did a FANTASTIC job.
ReplyDeleteAs was stated above tho, I'm not gonna give a full judgement until I see some gameplay or actually play either a demo or the game itself. But I'm very impressed.
And I'm also glad they didn't pull a Kojima and just show a still photo of Lara with someone saying "Survive" or something like that (check out Kojima's first teaser trailer for 'MGS: Rising'. It'll make sense then.) That would've been a MAJOR letdown.
That is a beautiful piece of CG. Lara looks just right. It's so realistic!
ReplyDelete.am I the only one who's not impressed? Yeah it's a good trailer and probably a good game, but it is not tomb raider. Crystal dynamics have changed the whole concept, and has in my opinion lot of pressure to make it back on the right track.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Karl Stewart is telling the truth but I font know... I want to play tomb raider. Not some sell-out, mainstream game.
Dont hate me...
Jennie, I don't hate you at all. In fact, I agree with you, at least in some respects. If I saw this trailer without knowing it had anything to do with Tomb Raider, I might not make the connection. Gorgeous as it is, it has a strong aroma of Final Fantasy about it. ;)
ReplyDeleteBut so far everyone from Crystal who's spoken on the record about the upcoming game has stressed that they're trying to stay true to the feel of the original series, while also adding some new game mechanics and updating the graphics to keep the game current and viable.
I adore the old games, but I don't think it would be possible for the developers to sustain the series if they just kept doing the same thing over and over again. Sure, hardcore fans would buy, but the majority of gamers probably wouldn't. We saw that with the sales figures from the Core Design games. TR2 had peak sales, and things went gradually downhill from there. And these days, like it or not, unless you're doing some low-budget, indie type thing, low sales means no more games.
My hope is that they'll start fresh with this new Lara and then gradually allow her to evolve into the tough, resourceful character we all know and love through many more adventures. I guess there's no way of knowing whether this will actually happen except to wait and see.
I watched it last night, I'm really surprised by the emphasis on the cinematographic approach, yeah, it's just a trailer, but it confirms roughly every rumor I've heard since the first time I knew about this Tomb Raider.
ReplyDeleteI'm very optimistic about this game, seems the dark atmospheres come back again!
I'm excited, now it will take back it's rightful place as King of the Explorer/Platformer Games from Uncharted and Assassin's Creed.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I just had to answer again. Thanks fir your respond, Stella, because I am a huge fan of you!
ReplyDeleteAnd I understand what you're saying. Unfortunately, hehe. They want to make money and try t keep it going at the same time... I just really hope the new game will remind more of the first. So yes, we just have to wait and see :-)
Thanks again for your answer!
WOW! What great comments! Can't you feel the excitment of something great to come and the undertow of grief of losing something we have grown to love. I agree Jennie, and hope that Crystal Dynamics stay true to their word and honor the Lara we all know. And Stella, I hope as you do that the gameplay with evolve and the strength and confidence in Lara will develope so the end will bring us a recognition we hope for. I don't want to lose "Lara" but we all know it was time for a re-invention. So let's wait it out and get ready for the next ten years of Tomb Raider.
ReplyDeleteYes I definetly agree with Jennie, Karl is basically changing the "true Lara". Although this trailer reveals the fact that this is about survival, I'm not quite fascinated with how we can do whatever we want and go wherever we want, but I am very intrested at the fact that you can feel, see, and experience what she goes through. And especially the point where the ledges and contraptions highlight themselves revealing the way as it showed in the GAMESPOT video, but then again, I gotta agree with Stellalune. We'll just wait and see if it'll remind me of the first Tomb Raider game. (:
ReplyDeleteThat jump with the lightening in the background gave me goosebumps! AWESOME! I hope we get to do that! I wanna have faith 'cause I just can't stop "being Lara". Come on Crystal D., give us that Lara of TRI and II.
ReplyDeleteWow, I certainly have a new 'love' for Lara, if the game plays like 'Tomb Raider' with this look, it will be very compelling to play. Lara looks 'soft' as she should in this trailer and this is what defines her. I'm glad that the 'story' is being told now, rather than a game as the 1st TR that just dropped us in (hence why Anniversary was tweaked for the story). I also want to thank Stella for the page as I have used it to re play the games I have and get those few artifacts I didn't when I played through originally. I know that graphics don't make a game, they just define how it looks and it will all boil down to gameplay. If you look at how much Drake (Uncharted) has progressed from 1 to 2 and how 3 is looking, I'm sure that the new TR will look spectacular. I'm just hoping that the gameplay also sports the same good looks (anyone here remember seeing the trailers and even the illustrations for games and then the actual look wasn't close BUT the game was so enjoyable that no one cared that it didn't look like the drawings). We invest too much in how something looks and oftentimes forget to "look under the hood". I hope the game plays as good as it looks!
ReplyDeleteI'm sort of excited for the new game. I'm a bit worried because it is such a massive change and I hope that they don't change the integrity and the core of the character and story just to become a popular hit. I'm sad to lost the old Lara and I would continue buying the games even without the new reboot. I love the new graphics and Lara looks fantastic. I'm sort of on the fence about her voice though. I wish she didn't sound so much like a child. I understand though that she is supposed to be quite young and naive here though. I think its a good idea to make the story more gritty, however I hope they don't turn it into some sort of Silent Hill thing. Also having seen the gameplay it looks fun but incredibly dark and slightly morbid :P All in all good concept I just hope they don't butcher it, as it could be so easy to do so. The trailer is definitely promising. I hope CD does the series right. For now we'll just have to see.

ReplyDeleteArk here, from Portugal. I so wanna play this game now. If the gameplay is half as good as the graphcs, we migh be seeing a preview not of a major hit, but of something that will endure, like Metal Gear Solid 1 or Wolfenstein 3D. I'm just afraid that this Lara is a totally different Lara and that her storyline will be re-written(again)and none of the plots from the previous Avalon/Natla Arcs will make sense. What is your opinion on this Stella? I'm a fan from th very beggining and I have to agree that this needed a reboot. And I'm loving what I am seeing so far.
ReplyDeleteFor final, thanks Stella for your work, without your help I wouldn't get the Platinum in Underworld.
game looks awesome and will be awesome on the ps3
ReplyDeletecan't wait to get the game in my grubby little hands.regards to all tombraiders jtk
hey game i cant get over ever since i saw a new tr i havent wanted anything but that i just have a question i was hopeing u would answer for me stella does lara still have increadble jymastics like in legend anyversry and underworld ( srry for spelling im only 12 XD )i would think not because im sure the controlles are different lol anyway looks amazing rated M though :o( oh well ill buy it withh parents crider card XD if you reply please call me emily joy anoymous was the only 1 that worked for posting
ReplyDeleteoops i mean credit card
ReplyDeletealsomean with wow i need more spelling practice XD alsofrom emily joy
@Anonymous and Anonymous (Emily): I think it's a little soon to tell too much about the new game, but what I've seen and heard so far (trailer, screenshots, E3 gameplay demo) certainly seem promising.
ReplyDeleteMy *fear* is that the series will slip too far into the survival-horror genre. IMO, there are already enough games like that and Tomb Raider doesn't need to become another. My *hope* is that this game will introduce a new Lara who, by the end of it, will become the strong, independent adventurer we've all come to know and love, and that this game will lay the foundation for many more adventures to come. I guess time will tell....
dear stella thanks for calling me emily bye the way and your right it kinda is to soon to tell but i think that the idea of the new game is to be more realistic instead of just, not, showing pain like in preverious games lara will actually scream and show emotion and the more wounds, cuts, and, scrapes will slow lara down as she tryes her best to traverce through the strange island.
ReplyDeletei think thats pretty sweet but do you think that the produceres are goona go to far off the course of the whole seiries and name TOMBRAIDER, i guess we will all find out.
i still cant waite for the new and improved game, im sure it will be a jaw sroping experciance.
sincerely,
Emily Joy
Emily: I also don't want Lara to stray too far from her roots. After all, like you said, the game is called TOMB RAIDER, not Zombie Island Raider. ;) In one of the recent interviews (can't remember which now), Karl Stewart from Crystal Dynamics said that tombs will indeed be raided, but Lara's reasons for going into the tombs will be a bit different than in past games. "Unlike before, when she used to go in on purpose, now it's all about getting the hell out." I'm guessing that once she finds her inner strength in this first game, she'll once again be choosing to head into dangerous situations. At least I hope so.... :D
ReplyDeleteIt really looks like there is something empowering about this version, in having to play as a character who starts out with nothing and has to develop all the skill and confidence that she's associated with.
ReplyDeleteThere's a really strong visceral feel to the trailer, and I see why people are concerned it might just be another "survival horror", but I'd like to point out that there is something deeper here, which has been present in Lara Croft from the beginning. I remember playing this game and feeling the effect of being a female character who is strong, capable, and self-reliant. It sounds silly, but it really had a psychological impact: imagine you're a young male made to fantasize about being strong and capable, not by watching an muscle-man beat up bad guys in an action-movie, but by actually identifying yourself with a woman.
(And a woman who is not only an archaeology geek, but someone who comments on the beauty of what's around her, who is motivated by genuinely human-facing-the-cosmos sorts of feelings.)
There's just something incredibly inspiring and humanist about characters like Lara - who have no superpowers (just ignore that she's an heiress ;) ). And it seems like that's the core of the thing that they are trying to do with this game: to create a backstory where Lara wasn't merely well-trained (by an older man), or preternaturally gifted, or well-armed, or well-funded - no, rather her capability comes from an act of sheer willpower.
I think that's where Tomb Raider can be quite different to survival horror. I mean, survival horror games can feel just like horror-themed arcade shooters sometimes. But Tomb Raider's obsession with its protagonist has the potential to maybe say something more profound and life-affirming.
- David E
stella your exactly right i red or saw that to i just dont know where. lara will have to find tretrous routs to encounter to get her to a safe location instead of being attacked by varirous things she will have to survive off the land and suplies she is givin. sincerely Emily Joy
ReplyDeleteDear David E,
ReplyDeleteyour dead on correct and yor speach was beutiful. i like the idea of having a femal kick ass protanganics. i think it proves that MALES arnt the only strong thing on this world FEMALES are equally as strong.
Dear stella, the first tombraider was just simply a game with no real storyline on lara. this game will actuall tell the story on how lara became who we all know and cant get over today. in the first tombraider it showes a woman with a magical marry popens backpack. XD now once we all see lara we know her story and remember all her past adventures. the produceres probally made up a quick get away about how lara became who she really is (a famous adventure/arcoulogous.)in the last revelation they come up with werner voncroy who teaches lara how to do what she does now. so i think that they are finally clearing that up in her game. sincerely still Emily Joy :o)
Very well said, David. Wish I was so articulate. You've touched on a lot of things that I was thinking but just didn't quite know how to say.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar experience with Lara when she first arrived on the gaming scene. I was a stay-at-home mom with few creative outlets and whose biggest adventure was a trip to the playground. At first I just enjoyed living vicariously through through Lara, this incredible, brave person, who traveled the world doing things I could only dream of. But later I began to connect, through the internet, with other fans. I found I was able to help other people with the games and eventually even enjoy a sort of niche celebrity as a walkthrough writer. Lara helped broaden my perspective on many levels. She deepened my interest in history, mythology and archeology. She's allowed me to make contact with people all around the world—and even make a few lasting friends who I'd never have met otherwise. And she's inspired me to take a few risks—maybe nothing life-threatening, but certainly things I wouldn't have tried before.
I'm hoping this new storyline will stay true to the spirit of the character and the series, and so far everything I've seen and heard about the game seems to support that.
stella awwww that was so nice i didnt even know lara inspired you that much. she inspieres me because i was a normal girl liveing in a normal boaring world until i met lara, well you know wat i mean, lol i took chances i wouldnt have done EVER lara is a true genious and you and lara will always be my hero. - Emily joy
ReplyDeleteTHIS is the cideo to watch, for actual gameplay---not as fabulously rendered as the pure CG of the trailer, but still phenomenal!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFBrgeSjj-0&feature=relmfu
Wow this is absolutely great! It's so realistic. I've always loved Tomb Raider, all games, and none of them has ever dissapointed me. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved Tomb Raider. It was the first game I played and I was over 40 :) No other game has ever managed to make me feel the magic of this one! To begin with, I have always been fascinated by history and archeology and when I was with Lara I felt I was travelling to mysterious, far away hidden places or on tours to the most enchanted corners of the world. I could have played it all my life... until one day they came out with the new controls! I just couldn't use my fingers with enough speed and finally gave up playing with Anniversay.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew, who by the way has never liked Tomb Raider, saw the trailler and is longing for the game to come out and play it and so are his friends. But I feel sad to think that there will be a new Tomb Raider in the market and I won't be playing it! The pc controls are so frustrating! I'm already 55... Maybe it's that my fingers are too clumsy? I managed so well with all the older TR. Isn't there a way to simplify the game so we don't have to rush from one end to the other of the keyboard? I remember Stella that I wrote you a mail asking for help and you were a real pet sending me different suggestions, I always thought that was so wonderful of you!
Anyway, I will give it a try. Who knows?
xoxoxoxooxxo Julia
Hi, Julia. I'm a grown-up gamer too, as you've probably noticed. I've managed to keep up OK with the newer iterations, but I also hated the keyboard controls. The thing that saved my butt--or I guess I should say my fingers--was the Xbox 360 controller. They make a special version for Windows, but if you have Win 7, even a regular Xbox 360 controller from the console should work if you let Windows download the software. It plugs into a USB port and is compatible with all the newer TRs right out of the package.
ReplyDeleteIt takes a little getting used to, especially if you've been playing w/ keyboard and mouse for years, but the newer games are a million times more accessible with a controller. Everything's literally at your fingertips.
I got mine on Amazon and have links to the product pages on my various controls pages (e.g., http://tombraiders.net/stella/walks/controls/TR7controls.html#camera) in case you're interested.
Good luck and raid on!
I´m a old Tomb lover I had all the Tomb games before on my PC:s but theres are out now . I have Mac now since 2 years back and have only the Anniversary on my Mac..I hope the new Tomb 9 coming on Mac because I want it to...I really hope..... Mac is much better to play on then PC:s..
ReplyDeleteIn other word...I demand them to do it for Mac....Right...
I have a feeling that the new Lara isn't strong as before..They changed her personality. Why do they have to left Lara Croft from underworld and make a new one? That Was not necessary!Of course I will buy this game..Lara Croft was unique-Now I'm not sure..
ReplyDeleteSorry for my bad eng..:3 luv your site!
TRfan..
David: I'm so happy you feel the same way. I'm a guy and Ever since I was a little kid; I was raised mainly by women. As I started becoming a gamer at age of 3 lol; I was always fascinated with the women. They were pretty, cool and just awesome. Girl power is just more interesting to me that guy power. I'm not sure why. I was 7 when the classic TR came out so i didn't relate to it as much as I did now. I have all of the games from REV to underworld. I have to say TR was one of the reasons why I decided to major in animation. I plan to get this and the future ones.I've seen the gameplay at the convention and it's nice and fun. It's definitely interactive gameplay. No one will be let down. Also for the ones saying this is the new Lara;she's being replaced, stop it! Lara is going to be lara no matter what she looks like. Change is good. Who wants someone to stay the same for 10 yrs. Anyway, this is the young lara and it's a reboot. -Paul
ReplyDeleteA rebirth of Lara is born, i am very impress on how well the graphics made Lara and her storyline so more mature. I cant wait for this game to come out I collected and play theses games for years now. I really love them, and hope more will follow or someone will tell some more tells about lara's life.
ReplyDeleteThe game looks quite interesting. The voice of course sounds younger, hence a younger Lara, but did they get rid of the Werner Von Croy story line from her past? Didn't he teach her a lot when she was a teenager. Of course I got this from Revelations: Tomb Raider 4, but I was curious if they re wrote a lot of her background or just small areas to fit the new plot line into it.
ReplyDeleteOh i can't wait!!!:(((((
ReplyDeleteI can't wait, but remember the trailer's are always better than the game graphics. I still haven't completed TRUW lol, I'm no good at the timed bike run & kinda quit playing it. Now I have to start over because my pc crashed. Well that'll give me somethng to do till then. Also, I'd like to see the original TR 1-5 re-built for play on vista & W7, maybe smooth some of the pixals out in the first 3. I'm missing one of the games from my collection & have PS games that I'd like to get on pc, so it'd be nice if they could make a new box set. I know my kids would play it along with me. I'm ranting I know, but with the technology they have it'd be nice to see after the new game. That'd give them time to make a new game & give us the players something to keep us occupide for the duration hopfuly. Still can't wait for this new one, hope it's as good as they make it out to be since they are taking their time.
ReplyDeleteLoved the trailer because of the graphics. Not loving that they took out swimming - well at least no underwater swimming they said. The title doesn't fit either. Hopefully it wont be nearly as buggy as TRA which at certain points on easy level no less, took 200 tries to get to the next level. I'm not sure how interesting an island will be especially if Lara doesn't get in the water. Will probably buy it used after a very long wait.
ReplyDeleteStella, you are wonderful though. Don't change a thing with the upcoming walkthrough except maybe more of your humor which was awesome during rough spots. :)
Awesome trailer.
ReplyDeleteI have seen others pics too n i'm loving this game
I finally just saw this today .... 3 times! I am awestruck. The graphics are amazing. The only sad part is that I have to wait a whole year :(
ReplyDeleteCome on Guys...This is Laracroft...Even if its a blend of survival horror...i think Tomb raider games is all about Survival...Did anybody remember the snakes of Jungles of India in TR-3...? I dont think so any game even Resident evil can make you heart beat rise to escape the bite of Snake...The bottom line...they are blending Technology with Tombraider.....Lara is Lara..
ReplyDeleteThe makers of my 1st fav games making my second 1 word Epic :-D
ReplyDeleteSo they make a trailer for a Tomb Raider game...
ReplyDelete...without showing any tombs.
Wow,I love this tomb raider trailer can't wait to play the actual game tho,its way better compared to the other TR games, but I still love them I'm a big tomb raider fan,but we have to wait so long I don't mind as long as they finish this game I'm fine with it,these graphics are amazing I really can't wait for this game to be released its going to be a epic tomb raider
ReplyDeleteStella I used your walkthrough for tomb raider chronicles, they really help me,but all your jokes made me lol
ReplyDeleteSeriously? This game is not going to bring TR back to its original glory. If anything it made the series worse. The game may have good grafics, and an interesting story line... but it is not, nor will it ever be Tomb Raider.
ReplyDeleteThe lot of the main story line has changed to the point that the original Lara does not exist. From the main storyline, she original got into Tomb Raiding from her fiance dying in a plane crash and having her survive until she found civilization. What is this? No proper background story. None anyway that stick anywhere near to the original. Also didn't she use to raid tombs when she was sixteen, with Von Croy? What happened to that?
And the game have become more of a Resident Evil game than an actual Tomb Raider game. Uncharted is more of a Tomb Raider game out there right than any, even more so than these new main stream games.
Plus she also looks Chinese, not British. She's british if I remember correctly. And the voice acting makes her sound like a mouse.
OMG!! Im soooo excited for the new TOMB RAIDER.. although its been rated as a mature i dont mind playing it even if im 12yrs. old i have downloaded and bought all tomb raider game and seen the films too im extremely excited to play it... But i dunno why i dont seem to like her shes not the lara i knew and lara alwayz went for finding some artifact this is like seriously i dunno hw gud it will be i feel its shall be named a survivor game and make the gal some one else bcs this isnt LARA CROFT, I WILL MISS U
ReplyDeleteDear Crystal Dynamics crew,
ReplyDeleteYou have done a great job ! Congratulations.
Thank you for improving such a huge icon to more realistic one. It's all what TR was missing- emotions, soul and the feeling, that the player sees and feels what Lara does. I believe that lots of players will be satisfied, because they will forget the reality and will really feel to be in the game world fully while playing. Its great graphics and realistic structure and so much improved main character will definitely make all old and new fans enjoy this game thoroughly.
PS. I LOVE LARA'S LOOKS-HER LEGS, HIPS AND WAIST etc LOOK SO MUCH MORE REAL. Now it's more fun to play with a " real person" not with a "robotic one" .

ReplyDeleteDear stella,
ReplyDeleteI think that you should update ur TOMB RAIDER 2012 page thingy... i fiugered out a actual relese date, (i know this because its the same day my other favorite game comes out)also, its on gamestops page, but thats not how i found out, i know some people ;)well enough with how i know... The relese date that most internet and chrystal dynamics "state" is 12/31/12... and i have a random off topic question, im only 13 so i have NO idea how to use the TRLE and i just downloaded it from your page, i need help.
P.S. i am like completly clueless on how to play ANY TR on the pc, because ive never played it before im a sony playstation 3/downloaded ps1 user... thanks Stella :)
Anonymous, thanks for the info, but a lot of retail sites are giving various estimated release dates. I'm not going to post anything until I hear it from Crystal Dynamics.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Level Editor, I'm afraid I'm clueless, but there are links to lots of helpful resources on my TRLE page (http://tombraiders.net/stella/trle.html). Good luck!

oh stella that was my screen name, my last name wasnt real but my first name was, and thanks XD
ReplyDeleteOMG i can't wait till 2013,i thought it's coming soon :(
ReplyDeleteThe reason I play Tomb Raider are the endless puzzles from the 1st TR up to the Chronicles. Later games are more action based and lots of movies making the game short.
ReplyDelete
