Rise of the Tomb Raider Coming to Windows PC January 28

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics announced today that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available for Windows PC January 28, 2016. The game launched exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in November, leaving most of the fan base out of the loop. So this should come as good news to PC players. PlayStation 4 gamers will have to wait until late 2016.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available as a digital download from Steam, the Windows 10 store, Amazon, the Square Enix e-store, and other retailers. The standard edition is priced at $59.99. The Digital Deluxe edition is $89.99, and includes the Season Pass for current and future DLC. A physical disk will be available in some countries.

A deluxe edition is available for pre-order exclusively through the Square Enix Store. It is priced at $149.99 and includes download codes for the game and Season Pass, a 12-inch statue of Lara Croft, a collectible steel case, and replicas of Lara's leather journal and jade necklace.

For additional information, including minimum system requirements, check out the Q&A from the developers below. For spoiler-free details about the game—along with my walkthrough in progress—visit my Rise of the Tomb Raider page and previous blog posts, which cover things like the Season Pass, game modes and Expedition, and other features.

    1. Hi, Janet. I answered you by email but figured I'd post a comment as well in case anyone else has the same question. PC controls are now included in my waltkhrough (http://tombraiders.net/stella/tomb10.html) and I will be adding a separate controls list at some point, but they are also listed in the game under Options > Keyboard and Mouse or Options > Gamepad if you're playing with a controller.

  2. Hi Stella, been a fan for many years and frequented this site for help numerous times. Was really looking forward to Rise however am a little perplexed by the min requirements. I am running win 7 32bit 4gb ram and GTZ 550ti card, and so appears I won't be able to run the game. I'm sure not all pc users are running 64bits, so why on earth did they require this. Will there be a 32 bit game coming out or will I have to upgrade my whole system just to play this game?

    1. Hi, Anon. I honestly don't know. I doubt they'll release a separate 32-bit version. I don't know enough about PC hardware to give an informed answer about why they made that choice. I assume it has to do with designing for higher-end systems to support the kind of graphics they wanted to incorporate. I will gladly pass this question on to the developers and reply again if/when I get an answer.

  3. In case anyone else is wondering about this, I checked with Crystal Dynamics and they checked with Nixxes, the developer that worked on the PC port. Here's the response:

"Windows 64-bit has become fairly common for all major game releases since 2015. Minimum requirements have gone up for recent games, focusing to take advantage of the hardware that the majority of the players has."

They also mentioned that your 4 GB RAM is below minimum specs, so you'd have a hard time playing anyway. Maybe an upgrade or a new console might be in order.

    I hope that helps!

  4. Hi Stella
I have really enjoyed "Rise of the tomb raider" up to the point it shuts down.I'm playing on a Windows 7,64 bit PC.When I try to go from sheltered ridge to the Gulag, Windows shuts
me down.A message saying "Corropt texture data passed into PCDX11 texture constructor" pops up.

    1. Hi, Daniel. Sorry to hear that. There are a few suggestions on the Steam forums. If those don't help, you might try posting on the Square Enix Support Forum or contacting Square support directly. Here are links for all:

    2. Thanks for your suggestions Stella, but I think, baring a game upgrade,my only hope is to sit tight until your walkthrough is complete and I can download one of your saved games beyond the point I'm stuck right now.

    3. Hi again Stella
Where do I find the 8 red laptop computers, i need to destroy for the data corruption mission in the Russian zone.I think this might be my problem.

    4. I'm not sure how completing a challenge is related, but by all means try it. My waltkhrough for the gulag is here:

      That particular challenge is here:

    5. Hi again.Since I am unable to get to the Gulag,by either of the 2 routes available this obviously won't help me.It was a desprerite idea.Looks like I may have to write this game off as a lost cause. Thanks again.

    6. I don't understand. Have you reached that part of the game in the story yet? Once you've beaten it, you should be able to fast travel back to the base camp there.

    7. Thats my problem, the game crashes part way between Sheltered Ridge & Gulag.I can fast travel from sheltered ridge to base camp but what good does that do?I do not have rope arrows, the knife or explosives so I can't finish the Russian zone.

    8. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't understand what you meant when you said completing the laptop challenge in the game might fix the graphics issue. That didn't make sense to me. Since the laptop challenge starts in the Gulag, I thought maybe you'd already gotten through that area once and were trying to get back via a path that no longer exists. I still don't know what's causing the crash.

If you want to send me your save file, I will try and load it, navigate to the Gulag, and then send it back to you. I can't guarantee it will work, and that the error wont recur, but I'm certainly wiling to give it a try. My email is stellalune at tombraiders dot net.

The only other things I can think of are to try rebuilding the game cache in Steam and/or reinstall the game. To verify and rebuild the cache, right-click the game in the Steam Library, choose Properties, then choose Verify Integrity of Game Cache. This can take a while but it may help. If not, I would again suggest you contact tech support and/or post on the forums. I'm no computer expert, so I'm just taking wild guesses here.

    9. OUTSTANDING When I Verified the integrity of the game cache it found two files that would not verify. After it redownloaded the game from Steam,I tried the problem area and its now possible to continue on.You are a genius Stella Thank you so much.

    10. Awesome! I'm so glad it worked out. Sorry I didn't think of that sooner. Like I said, I haven't played much of this game on the PC yet, but I've used that technique to repair other games with different issues. Hope the rest of your playthrough is trouble free. :)

    11. My thought right now,is to do this on any new game I purchase download in the future. One thing I noticed playing the game after your fix,the animation is more spastic & jerky.I don't think there is a connection and I can live with this if I have to.

    12. I'm not all that tech savvy, but that sounds more like a hardware issue than missing game files. Lowering the graphics settings might help, but this game needs a lot of juice compared to TR 2013.
