Yesterday I posted a petition on Change.org urging the Tomb Raider developers to reconsider their exclusive agreement with Microsoft. More than 10,000 fans have signed on so far!
Earlier today at Gamescom Microsoft's Phil Spencer confirmed that the controversial exclusivity deal for Rise of the Tomb Raider "has a duration," though he declined to say how long the timed exclusive will last. Spencer also announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released on Xbox 360, which also bodes well for a possible future PS3 release.
I don't know whether our small effort made a difference in the timing of this announcement, but I'm sure it didn't hurt. Our efforts were mentioned in an article on the PC Gamer website, "Why Rise of the Tomb Raider's exclusivity deal is a prehistoric relic," and the petition gained a lot of traction on social media. Thanks again to everyone who supported us. Please continue to sign and spread the word, and perhaps the developers will think twice before signing future exclusives.
Thanks for starting the petition. It makes a difference to fans, not so sure about SQ and CD. I really liked the reboot and was looking forward to the sequel. Not sure what I will play in its place ... somehow the trailers for Drake just don't resonate with me. Though maybe I should try it. I almost picked up The Last of Us several times but it seems kind of depressing. Just don't know. --Can't believe we got screwed over like this. JM
ReplyDeleteThis petition is garbage, its a timed exclusive. Stop crying and get over it already
ReplyDeleteNo, I will not. The fact that it's a timed exclusive does not minimize the insult to loyal PC and PlayStation fans. I think this deal was a big mistake and I stand by that assertion. Thanks for your comment.
DeleteI stand by you on this one, Stella. This was a gigantic marketing blunder by Crystal Dynamics. It was amateurish to think that they could disrespect tombraider gamers like this and this insensivity was very revealing. Did they really think that they could disregard Playstation gamers like this? Sony can thank Lara for a large part of PS' success and her creators can thank PS gamers for their success. CD created a good game with the last installment of Tomb Raider. However, there are questions asked whether they are able to relate to what made Lara great in the past. They shifted the balance to action whereas the Lara we followed in past was more of an adventurer in my opinion. At any rate, their credibility took a hard beating with their latest marketing flop.

Thanks, Robert. I appreciate the support. I know we're not alone on this one. The Xbox exclusive was a big mistake, and while I want the series to be successful in general, I think sales are going to take a huge hit over this. I doubt it will be the cash cow they had hoped.
DeleteI'm still debating whether and how to continue to promote the game, but as a long-time fan I'm angry and heartbroken. :(
