30-Day Tomb Raider Challenge Day 9: Should Crystal Produce Another Anniversary Edition?

Tomb Raider: Anniversary wasn't quite as commercially successful as Legend and Underworld, and so far Crystal Dynamics have said they have no plans to remake another classic game. But what do the fans think? Would you like to see an updated version of Tomb Raider II or any of the other classic games? Why or why not?

This question was recently suggested by Rhyse, but the idea has been floated by many TR fans over the years.

Sales figures for the Tomb Raider series as of 2009, via Kotaku.

  1. Don't know if it would be at all economically feasible, but in *my* perfect world there'd be a brand new game, a classic remake, and a sequel to LCGoL in alternating years. Hmmm...Guardian of Light...sounds like a future challenge question. ;)

  2. I would play it, and I am sure a lot of TR fans would too - but I doubt it would be commercially successful.

I higher res texture packed/polygon count version of the classic (TR 1 -5) games though, that might be cheaper to make and could sell? Or maybe that is just me again.

  3. Yes, TR2 was my favourite Core game, I am all for a remake! I think Crystal D did a great job on remaking the first one, I have played Anniversary many times.

  4. a remake with the whole ps1 series would be Brill but I just want a remake of number 2 so bad!

  5. HELLS YEAH!!!
    I'd totally play another remake
especially if it were 2,3or4 or all of them mixed in one awesome long action pack game!
With NEW boss fights and ALL!!!

  6. Personally, I'd love a remake of my favourite TR game, TR2, as long as it's done properly. I enjoyed Anniversary but I felt that the game play diverged too much from the original game (e.g. that move you need to do to take down the T-Rex took some time to master).

I doubt it will ever happen but just imagine how fantastic the Great Wall, Venice and Tibet would look with modern graphics.

  7. I'd buy and play all of them if they made remakes of 1 - 5. Hell I'd even play a remake of Angel of Darkness :D

  8. I would LOVE a reboot of TR2 if it was true to the classic. It was just a great game with amazing levels.

  9. I've always wanted a remake of TR2. I loved Anniversary and I get that it wasn't a straight up remake but a 'reimagining'and stuff but it was missing so many thing from the original that could have still stayed. On City of Vilcabamba the fact that the same music played near the axes even though they were moved to Qualopec hurt. It also could of had more boulders and the chomping blades. If TR2 was to be remade it would have to keep somewhat true to the original.

  10. Yes, I think they should make a remake of all Core games with better graphics, I'm sure a lot of TR fans would love to play it. My favourite Core game is TR3 and I would really like to play a "nowadays" version of the game. However, I think Crystal won't do anything of that, since they will make a totally new TR game.

  12. I think they should remake tomb raider 2 and get Keeley Hawes to voice Lara Croft again.

  13. I agree with you stella. Haha, I think in the "Tomb Raider" fans' perfect world there would be great remakes and plenty of new games.

  14. I'm sorry to hear Anniversary wasn't as successful as the other games. That story is by far the best of the entire series so far (it's what I'd hoped they'd make a movie of), and the reinventing of the classic tale was so full of care and skill.

Since they are unlikely to develop any more games with the engine, why not release the code with an interface to develop for it, and we could have fan-built mods and worlds to build ourselves (MAC-FREINDLY, PLEASE!!!)

  16. YEAH DEFINITELY ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY. i think they should remake all of the other classics. esp tr 3 that would be totally awesome

  17. Personally I think they should remake them since I've never played the older versions plus put them on xbox and a shout out to FearEffectInferno. Amazing job on that picture!

  18. I think it would be amazingly cool if they made an anniversary of the classics. Just combinded them into one big game. Just as a side project for the next game. The photo above is amazing and really makes me want a TR2 remake. :)

  19. Also I really hope that one day Square Enix teams up with TT games and creates my ever hopeful LEGO Tomb Raider game! I still have my fingers crossed Stella! :)

  20. Definitely a TR2 remake. It was my first and still my favorite of all the TR games.

  21. Yes, yes! LEGO Tomb Raider!!! :D

  22. I'd love a TR2 redo, but once a corperation has 'moved on', it's highly unlikly they'll step backward. Eidos and Crystal Dynmaics want to you love their new Lara, not their old one.

  23. I remake of an awesome classic (like all the classic TRs) with modern graphics and all is always a good thing, as long as the new gameplay would be comparably good. I think Anniversary and Guardian of Light are the best TR games that Crystal Dynamics has made so far. So yes, I'm all for remakes, and especially a remake of TR3 would be gorgeous!

  24. I would love a new remake of any of the classic. But i would prefer a straight remake with little changes in the gameplay.
A re-imagining of a classic game dosen't convince me very much. But of course I will buy and play it!

  25. I wouldn't even mind then just chucking all the old tomb raiders on the Xbox live arcade

  26. I personally would love for people who were previously unable to play the series to have access to a modernised version. I myself am all up for a TRII remake - this is my favourite game in the series! I didn't enjoy the tweaks to Annniversary to fit into the Avalon storyline (probably because I didn't like the Avalon/trilogy storyline in general...), but really enjoyed reliving those ground-breaking moments again, so I'd prefer a true to the original modernisation, definitely =]

I also think it'd be interesting to see how fans of the 'new' Lara in TR 2013 would react to classic Lara!!

  27. Yes to Lego Tomb Raider as well!

I would love to see *all* of Lara's Core adventures recreated. Imagine how much fun Venice would be! :D

And a sequel to LCGoL would be fantastic. I would love it to be longer and more ambitious. What if they remade some of the classic Tomb Raider adventures under a GoL filter? How cool would *that* be! Same stories and locations, just completely different mechanics - all while still retaining some of the stand-out moments and set pieces from the games. That would be amazing.

  28. Yeah, I actually think thats a neat idea! :D

  29. I've been hoping for a remake of TR2 or at least an Unfinished Business DLC for TRA, I shall continue hoping :)

  30. I am definitely up for a remake, I just hope it will be more core like and less crystal like.

  31. They should only update the graphics and leave everything else alone but since they will not make another, it's a moot point.

  32. I've never played Core games, but a relative who discovered Tomb Raider in 1996 has the old TR2 box, and I think it would be fun to have a remake. Like Stella said, we can have Rise, Temple of Osiris and a remake all at the same time, which would be really fun.
