30-Day Tomb Raider Challenge Day 6: Are You a Secret Hunter?

Have you found all the secrets in any/all of the Tomb Raider games? Which ones were the hardest to collect? Which, if any, have you still not been able to get? And which game best presents the secrets? For example, do you prefer the games where the secrets are useful items like weapons, health and ammo; the ones with stylized objects like the dragon statues in TR2, the themed trinkets in Legend, etc; the ones where finding secrets unlocks special rewards or a bonus level?

P.S. Sorry this entry was posted a day late. Busy day yesterday. I backdated it so it would appear in the correct order in the archives.

P.P.S. I forgot to credit Fasca, who suggested the topic of secrets yesterday.

  1. Yes, I've found all the secrets in all the games, but there were a few I'd probably never have located without tips from other players. For example, the Gold Reward in Kazakhstan in Legend. I try not to look at spoilers when I'm first playing each game, but sometimes even I need a hint. ;)

I like the look of the little themed statues in TR2 and Legend, but I think when you go through the trouble of collecting all the secrets in a game, you should definitely be rewarded with more gameplay. So, yes, bonus levels all the way!

  2. I don't hunt for secrets much or do time trials. I did find all of them in the Core games.

  3. Have always liked searching for secrets and
hope that such a thing will be included in this
reboot next March. Found all secrets in the
first 3 games, with a little help from Stella's
walkthroughs of course, but fell 3 short of the
70 in revelation. For whatever reason, have always like the little dragon statues in TR2.

  4. I really enjoyed the idea of having a Silver, Jade and Golden dragon in Tomb Raider 2. It really made you go and hunt for them, like the roses in Tomb Raider Chronicles. I mainly just liked to try and find the Golden rewards in Legend and save the rest for later for better replay value. I also really loved doing the rubbing rewards in Tomb Raider Anniversary for the Wii. It really made me go hunt for them and was really enjoyable! :)

  5. i have found al the secrets in the classic tr game and tbh they are quite hard to reach sometimes. i also collected about 85% of the secrets in tr 2 and only 20% of the secrets in tr3. i have changed over to replaying the original tr. i would go and edit my reply for day one but i cba. i thought the secrets in tr 2 were a bit easy unless u have crap timing like in the great wall level where they put the jade dragon infront of a spiked wall. it took me ages to get thru that bit of the game.

  6. In anniversary I have collected everything, I liked how it unlocked some of the back stories of the characters and concept designs. I also loved the...relics I think... and how each one had their own history. I thought that was kind of neat, as opposed to just a random artifact that looks the same everywhere. Loved anniversary. Unfortunately, though, I have played it to death.

  7. Yes it's one of my favourite things to do. Me and my sister decided to replay the old ones and use Stella's walkthroughs to get the ones we missed. When I first played TR2 I never found the T-Rex guarded secret and it was so awesome to play the game all these years later and find something new like that. Secrets really make you enjoy levels more as you get to explore every inch of the level to find them.

  8. The only game I found all secrets was Legend. The main reason for that were the outfits, I really wanted to have all Lara's outfit. In Classics, I never bother to find secrets. Yes, I know a few, but I never try to find the rest because of the bonus level or items. I prefer the ones in Legend, those were my favourites. The relics in Anniversary were interesting, too, but in Underworld no. I like the golden roses in Chronicles and skulls in The Last Revelation. The dragon in TR2 is pretty cool, to. Actually, I like them all. :D

  9. I have all of the secrets from TR2 memorized; I love those little dragons! Also, the bonus prizes that you get from retrieving them all are really helpful.

  10. I have collect all the secrets, but i had never been able to find all of them without Stella's walktrough :)
The hardest secret it´s the last one in TR3. You need a lot of practice until you can reach it. Even when you replay.
I think TR3 gives the best bonus for find all secrets in the game (more gameplay). And TR2 the best bonus for finding all secrets in the level.

  11. I'm not exactly a secret hunter considering the fact that I use walkthroughs haha, but I really like to collect all the secrets. I missed one secret in TRLR and it's driving me crazy, but I can't go back to the level that I missed it in (Valley of the Kings), it's too close to the beginning of the game. D: but I take comfort in the fact that I KNOW where it is, I just got turned around and forgot to get it, haha. Getting all secrets is an accomplishment.

  12. I kind of do. In the newer ones I collect the relics/artifacts etc., but in the older ones, I would usually find them and just look at them and then run away. That's satisfying enough for me.

  13. From Tomb Raider Legend onwards, I have found all secrets in all the games and also have done all the time trials. In my experience, in the Crystal Dynamics games, you HAVE to do such things in order to experience the games in their true form. Otherwise, they are mostly just too easy if you only go the normal path, and you just miss some of the more clever moments of the game. Thats actually how I look at every game, so yes, I am definitely an explorer and no matter what game I play, I always try to explore every bit of every area as good as I can. As for the classic TR games, I never managed to get all the secrets in a game, but then again, I never looked at walkthroughs either.

My favorite types of secrets are the ones in TR3 and The Lost Artifact. TR3, because it gave you access to a whole new level (Although, eventually, I did download a savegame to play that level), and The Lost Artifact, because you would be rewarded with access to entirely new areas in the level, and some of these areas were even a complete change of scenery, like the final secret in the "Shakespeare Cliff" level.

  14. i hated it when secrets had no further function. The best levels are when collecting the secrets unlocks a level or something. In a lot of TRLE-player-designed levels, collecting all the secrets gives you access to an "extra" part of the level that may have it's own adventure attached to it. That's far and away the best use of secrets IMO.

  15. Generally yes I am, some playthroughs I've done without getting them all though. Secrets in TR1, TR3 and TR4 I really like because they help you in the game by giving you supplies usually (apart from the random Cathedral Key in Thames Wharf) :) TR2 is also good but I don't like the fact that you have to find all of them to get anything as much, TR5 I don't like because all you get is some art work. TR7, TRA and TR8 I liked getting them because it got me achievements as well as various other things :p

  16. Yes, but mainly on second play through. On the first play through, I'm generally so involved in the story I want to see what happens, on my next play troughs, I take my time and get everything.
I think Survivor and Anniversary, with the story elements to their collectables, present them best, and I like legends themed collectables.
