Camilla Luddington is the New Voice of Lara Croft

Camilla Luddington, voice of the new Lara CroftCrystal Dynamics has at last revealed the identity of the voice and performance actress portraying the new Lara Croft. Camilla Luddington, 28, was born in Ascot, England; attended The American School In England at Thorpe in Surrey; and has mostly worked in the United States. She has had recurring roles in the American television series True Blood and Californication. She also played Kate Middleton in the Lifetime TV movie William and Kate. She can be heard in the two TOMB RAIDER trailers released so far: "Turning Point" and "Crossroads".

After an international talent search using scouts in Europe and the US, Luddington stood out as delivering both a depth of emotion and the youthful tone needed for Lara Croft in the upcoming reimagining of the Tomb Raider franchise, due for release on March 5, 2013.

According to Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal, "This has been one of the most important jobs for us to get right. This Tomb Raider game is very different to any other and we are demanding far more from the voice and performance acting than ever before as we take the franchise in a new direction."

In addition to providing the voice, motion capture, and facial animation for the in-game character, Luddington will also participate in press events, including the Nerd HQ and Comic-Con panels in San Diego next month. There she will join the development team as they talk about Tomb Raider and the story behind its creation. She will not, however, be making personal appearances dressed as Lara, as previous live-action models have done.

  1. No matter what they do(right or wrong) many old fans will not be pleased.
I like Camilla's voice and moining and all yelling in trailers is logical if they want the game to be realistic. I am pretty sure that when i fall or get hit, i sound the same as her.

  2. I always thought that Keeley Hawes layed it on a bit too thick. Especially the bits in Legend where she went: "I missed Ghana!" and "Now Zip, that's quite enough of that." It made her sound too much like a caricature of a British snob. I know people complain that Camilla sounds too American, but I guess it's hard to find a good middle.

  3. If they were going to reboot her origin story and make her more American they should have just done it and made her American.

  4. I am happy she is British....cause It just seems right since that is the story line all the way through the Raider Games.

  5. I think it came down to Camilla and Tazmin Merchant from The Tudors and Game of Thrones. They both sound very much alike. I read somewhere that Camilla will not only be the voice of Lara but will also do all the motion capture for the character, and that's probably how she won out. She must have impressed Crystal Dynamics in the body movement aspect to get the role.

I'll miss Keeley Hawes but her voice is probably too mature sounding for this younger Lara. Anyhow, best of luck to Camilla and hope she does the Tomb Raider franchise proud!

  7. It is a shame that they are using a very American sounding actress to play a role that is about a British woman who has a Lord for a father. She is VERY British, nothing like an American, and this is ridiculous to the character and who she is suppose to be. I am disappointed with the choice. I think it stinks. Lara is a Brit and an aristocratic one at that. She would no more sound like an American than a fly could turn onto a cat. Seriously, this idea is flawed. I may play the game, but if it is like playing an American Lara. than I will stick to the older ones that portrayed her correctly. Lara is an English character this is as stupid an idea as using Opera W.to play Queen Elizabeth. Get it right or don't try it. This is an epic fail!

  8. I wish they would do a re-make of each of the original games instead of constantly changing Lara's origin story. I'm beginning to not like the creators. I liked the idea of changing her background in Legend to set up for Anniversary and Underworld, but a second time just makes me think the creators are running out of ideas to go with the originals.

  11. Just a reminder: rudeness will not be tolerated here. I've deleted the last anonymous comment and apologize to the previous posters for not doing it sooner. I had no internet for a couple of days so just now saw this. I hope I won't have to require logins to comment, but if people can't control themselves, I will do it. Let's try and be grown ups, OK. ;)

  12. I got the the rise of... In the Xbox one console bundle and it included the first one. Did not want to play the rise until I played the first and it is a very good game. Found this site looking for the areas I have been into and how far I need to go and the info is excellent. I kind of miss the aristocratic Lara and elegant baddies off Land Rover's, and I think they have made her reaallly suffer on this one, way more gore than in the previous games... Great site with all details, thanks for the hard work! Cheers!

    1. Hi, Chuck. Thanks so much for the nice comment. I'm glad my walkthrough was helpful.

I miss classic Lara too--and even Legend-Underworld Lara, though to a lesser extent. I think you'll like the direction things take in Rise, though. It had all of the good things about the reboot but less of the not-so-great. I hope they continue to incorporate more and harder puzzles; big, beautiful areas to explore; lots of treasures to collect; and of course more of the famous Croft wit.

Anyway, thanks again. Hope you enjoy the game. :)
