Tomb Raider 30-Day Challenge Day 9: Have you cried at any parts during the game?

UPDATE: This month-long challenge has officially finished, but you're still welcome to post your comments below at any time. We'd love to hear what you think.

And frustration over not being able to beat the centaurs in Tomb Raider: Aniversary doesn't count. ;)

  1. yes, In Underworld on the DS version when you had to put the bullets into her mum one by one, I cried :S

  2. Confession time : I did cry a little in Underworld too, when Alister died. He was a pain, always moaning and complaining about everything, but you could see that he meant a whole lot to Lara and Zip, and I kinda liked him too. There. You have it.

  3. Honestly, I almost cried when Lara left the stone dais place at the end of Underworld, and said, 'goodbye mother, rest in peace.

  4. I have never cried during the games. But I was sad when I finished TR4 ;( Even if I knew what was gonna happen.

  5. I really liked Alister, he was my favorite character from Legend & Underworld, along with Zip. They were just so funny together, and he had quite a funny 'takes himself too seriously' thing about him which amused me... So when he died, I think a tear or two may have escaped. I'll miss his whininess :')

  6. No, but the most emotional moment was in Underworld, where Lara found that her mother was... a thrall. I actually feel also very emotional when I listen to the classics' main theme. Nostalgia...

  7. At the end of TR4 my heart was shattered cause I hadn't clue what the ending was going to be but I was young when it came out.

  9. Like Jorge, I find the music quite emotional, rather than the actual game, especially the main theme. Strange that Tomb Raider is one of the few games I haven't felt the urge to cry at. :/

  10. I seem to recall the music in Underworld might have brought fourth a tear or two. I'm weird that way. Really strong music sometimes makes me cry, while other things that might have been more appropriate don't.

  11. Nope. Shouted? Yes. Laughed? Yes. Cussed? Definitely. Ever jumped-up and done a victory dance while shouting "BOOYAH!" at a fallen enemy? Yes I have. :) But cried? Nope.

  13. Yes, at the end of The Last Revelation, I was really sad because I thought that was the end of Tomb Raider and they would never do another game.

  14. Hey, to all you who get emotional about the music - nothin' weird about it! That's part of the reason the music is in the game: emotional impact. When some of us get that moved by the music, it's a testament to the talent of the composer.

Anyway, to give my own answer: I have never outright cried during a TR game. The closest I got was when Alister died and when Lara came across her mother as a thrall in Underworld. To be honest, I haven't really cried during a game, either - until recently.

  16. Okay I never cried at any Tomb Raider game, but yeah I cried with frustration once...It was Tomb Raider Chronicles >>> Rome Levels >>> Colosseum...in that level in the end there is a time sequence...I was never able to complete that sequence and that sucks!!! Emotionally....I never cried...not in any game nor in any movie!

  18. I really can't remember crying at any point in a TR game.
Although some music, films, can (despite being a macho)
make me cry. And that may be because I am in heightened
emergency, or combat mode. In a R/L emergency I'm not
the guy who paniks and freaks out. I tend to relax and focus
on what needs to be done... Breaking down in the shower later
is an option, but not in action. That said, I have, according to
my wife, several times "cried out" in my sleep; "Lara, watch out!",
"Get down Lara!", etc.. Or just plain "LARA!" (She never commented
on *how* I cried it out though, hehe!)

  21. I didn't neccisarily cry playing the games, but one of the parts that really really moved me was when Lara had to kill off Larson. She had to test the limits of how far she was willing to go, and she chose that. I loved how there was a certain guilt to the matter, even if she knew she had to do it. And then having to take the fuse away from his body and go up to the control room. It was so quiet. I thought they did a really really good job with that.

  22. It's funny, because I am a complete mess when I play a Final Fantasy game (especially 8), but I have only memory of getting verklempt with Tomb Raider: both the trailer and playing of Croft Manor being blown to smithereens. I really mourned for the house, because it was its own character, with a history, priceless artifacts and works of art, secrets, and a lot of my "youth" spent there playing (if you understand my meaning). I was even more upset by the story arc that brought its demise--I thought they were going to go in a completely different direction than Natla involvement. Made the TR universe a little smaller for me...

  23. Nope ... no crying, not even in frustration. I'd got angry sometimes with my ability to perform certain jumps or movements, and a bit frustrated when I couldn't solve something but after finding your walk-troughs ... not anymore!! ;)

  24. I've never cried in a TR game, although I was quite emotionally involved in TR2, the 1st 1 I played.
It was just so surreal and I really felt like I needed to breathe some fresh air after those 4 sunken-ship levels.

So if I can vote for 1 game that was emotion-worthy it was TR2!

  25. Simple answer: When Alister died. And: tears of happiness when I finally managed the "Right of Passage" time run.

  26. Crying is the only display of emotion that I haven't experience while playing TR. The main theme from the classic games does give me a crazy nostalgic feeling, though. Also, when I finally, after seriously about 10 years of trying to get through the first game, when I finally did beat it, I felt very weird, haha.

  27. Out of frustration...then maybe :p Out of emotional sadness then I nearly did once when Alister died, I liked him :(

  28. When Alister died, because I always thought he was sort of like Lara, except for the don't destroy stuff thing. Then when Grim died, because I liked him, even if he was a grumpy old man, and lastly when Roth died, because he was the only father figure ever seen in the games.
