Tomb Raider 30-day Challenge Day 2: Favorite Antagonist

UPDATE: This month-long challenge has officially finished, but you're still welcome to post your comments below at any time. We'd love to hear what you think.

Interpret this as you will. I'm going to assume it means favorite human (or humanoid) boss or enemy, since there's a separate topic for favorite enemy.

  1. Natla, for sure, in both her incarnations, although I prefer the original. You knew she was going to double-cross Lara from the get-go, but tell me you weren't rooting for her just a little bit. ;)

    Need I say more.

  2. I have to agree with you Stella. I mean you just can't beat Natla. She was the biggest one! None of the other games had as major antagonist as her. Also I prefer her newest incarnation in Anniversary and Underworld. That maybe just because I'm young though haha! I think that bringing her back in underworld and working Anniversary and Natla into the Legend was a great idea. I think her new incarnation gave Natla a new light and made her a better character :) just my opinion haha loving these challenges Stella :D it's my plan to comment on every one :D right until 2moz :D Cya! <3

  3. Sorry I meant *Natla into the Legend storyline* :)

  4. I enjoyed Rutland in Legends. Probably because he was about the easiest to kill, but yet a challenge.

  5. Day 2 is on :)

Well, I have to say Sophia Leigh. Although her role wasn't that big, she was a very intimidating woman. Her chat with Lara in the cutscene before the City level is just fantastic dialog, the two british ladies teasing each other, it was great. And the boss batle takes a whole level, and she is basically imune to bullets. And she also appeared in the Lost Artifact expansion! I got to say that, I think Sophia was inspired by Natla (because both were head of a company and tried to get Lara to work for them) and then, in Underworld, Natla was inspired by Sophia (since she "returned from the dead" as Sophia).
And by the way, Sophia has a whole site dedicated to her! :)

  6. Originally I'd have nominated Natla, naturally, but sadly I thought her "indestructible shapeshifting goddess" from TR:Legend was a bit stupid (and disrespectful), and her "burnt up" persona reminded me of overdone barbeque chicken. So I'm going to nominate Amanda Evert, bottle blonde extraordinaire.

  7. And by Legend I meant Anniversary. I've had a glass of porter.

  9. Rutland, he is the most slick, annoying and full of him self thinking he is so above everybody, but he is just hot air. I just love bringing him down.

  10. I would have to pick Sophia Leigh (with Natla (TR1 incarnation) close behind). Sophia Leigh is just awesome. her boss battle is awesome because for once you don't rely on bullets.her voice sends waves of nostalgia (sounds a lot like shelley blondes original TR voice)and she is just generally awesome.

  11. I Have To Agree With Stella, Natla we all knew she was going to double cross Lara from the start. Natla Was A Baddass that didn't die. I did kinda like how they made her fit in with anniversary and made it tie into Legend And Underworld. But For Me, Natla Takes The First Place Winner For Today's Contest.

  12. Definitely... I'm not sure. Probably Boaz. She's pretty :)

  13. Amanda, cause I can totally relate to the "good girl gone bad", and then tries to mend the error of her ways, in the end anyway.

  14. I'll have to agree with everyone about Natla and Amanda. But I think my official answer for favorite antagonist would have to be Von Croy. He isn't what you might call a straight-up antagonist; he was Lara's mentor, after all. He was very responsible for who Lara became. But there was some professional jealousy there; Werner recognized that Lara was going to be great in the field, perhaps a force strong enough to overshadow him. Then came the whole ordeal at Angkor Wat, the Iris, and Egypt. Grudges surfaced and created tension, and all the while there was a veiled respect still held by both parties. It took Werner getting in way over his head for him to realize that he really did value his protege'. Even after Lara was found, and the grudge over who left who behind shifted, he wasn't able to really make amends, so the tension still remained and stayed unresolved with his murder. The two were never able to restore their mentor/student relationship, so it might be safe to say Werner was always somewhat of an antagonist in Lara's eyes to the end. A bit of a tragic story, if you think about it.

  15. Original Natla from TombRaider1 and Anniversary and big serpent(England boss)from Legend.

  16. Tough one. Natla is the obvious choice. But I tend to Werner, as there is a more personal connection between Lara and him (TRU Natla father story aside). With Werner you never knew. Is he evil, is he good, is it just Seth's influence... Natla was easy to predict, in the end she always wanted to screw you over.

But I most enjoyed getting rid of Rutland, simply to annoy Amanda.

For the future I wish for strong male characters to play the badguy, someone with a strong motivation, someone who is otherwise attractive and fascinating. Where it is a shame to have to finish him. (Not like Terry Sheridan, though!)

  17. The "bosses", I don't much like.
It is the common enemies I prefer.
    The Henchmen, Raptors, Sharks, etc.
From these it is hard to choose a fave,
because the all are good in context.

  18. Natla has got my vote for all the reasons posted above. She's bad to the bone and doesn't care who she kills to achieve her goals

  19. I definitely agree that Natla is Lara's nemesis.

However I enjoyed battling the Dragon and TRex very, very much.

And also every single spider in the game (I hate spiders)

  20. Tomb Raider has a lot of really good female antagonists. Although Sofia Leigh is great - she has just about the creepiest evil plan of any villain - I must go with Amanda Evert.

I love how she's the reverse of Lara in so many ways but actually, when you think about it, really no worse than her.

Her fashion sense is pretty far out there thoguh. Doesn't all that black leather chafe in Bolivia?

  21. Another tough question. I get the feeling these games are going to force me to think. I have to say Natla on this one. For Pete's sake, she's an Atlantean goddess! I like the original version of her, but Underworld's was my favorite. She seemed really intent on destroying the world, she was manipulative, she was sneaky and deceitful, she was a back-stabber, she was influential and just all-around evil. We had no idea what the heck Marco Bartoli wanted to become a dragon for. If the developers had elaborated a bit more on that, I'd probably have to say he was my favorite baddie.

    Dragons rule. :)

  22. I haven;t played Anniversary, so Natla is still #2 for me.
My fave is Marco Bartolli, because I had respect for him as a fellow tomb raider.

He was in the story from the beginning to end and characterized very well. I LOVED the backstory about his and the monk's fathers who took each other out and him trying fulfill his own legacy.

I respect how he wasn't just after an expensive artifcat, but he believed in the dagger and used it on himself.

The villain I felt most sorry for was the scottish professor in TR3. It wasn't his fault, the shard corrupted him then mutated him!

  23. I love Sophia Leigh... there's something about her xD... somewhat like Natla, but not so "out there" if that makes sence...

  24. I think Mr. Von Croy has to be my favorite enemy... He was giving her grief every since she was a young girl.

Pieter Van Eckhardt was the creepiest and Natla was pretty evil, but had the best sarcastic sense of humor.

  25. Natla. Natla, Natla, Natla. She's the original TR villian, and there hasn't been another one as intimidating and sly as her since then.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Definatly Natla, if I think of Tomb Raider, I think of Lara first, Natla second :p

  27. Natla. And, like Stella says, she's the big one. I only played the Crystal Games, and I liked her most in Underworld. So...... everything

  28. If I think about it, I have to go with Natla. I've only played the Crystal games, due to me only being a Tomb Raider fan since 2011, but she's the best villain. She was the center of the Anniversary, Legend, Underworld trilogy, and she does the most villain-like things. However, Mathias comes in second. The mad old man from the island was creepy...
