Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Sadly this weekend's VGX Awards didn't bring a Tomb Raider sequel announcement—or the pile of accolades many of us were hoping for—but there's still some great news and a spiffy video trailer to go with it. TR 2013 is being completely rebuilt for next-gen consoles and will be released as the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition at the end of January.

According to the Official Tomb Raider Blog, "The team didn't simply up-rez the game, they pulled it apart and rebuilt it with obsessive detail and new technology."

The core action and story of Tomb Raider remain intact. Along with vastly improved graphics, Kinect support for the Xbox One version, and Vita play for the PS4 game, the Definitive Edition also includes all available DLC, plus a few bonuses. Here's what's in the box:

  • The fully rebuilt game for next-generation consoles
  • The Tomb of the Lost Adventurer DLC
  • Eight DLC multiplayer maps
  • Six DLC multiplayer weapons
  • Four DLC multiplayer characters
  • Six alternate outfits for Lara
  • Dark Horse digital comic book Tomb Raider: The Beginning
  • Brady Games digital art book Tomb Raider: The Art of Survival
  • The Final Hours of Tomb Raider documentary series

For additional details about the specific improvements, the development partners involved, and other game features, download this Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition FAQ (PDF document).

The Definitive Edition is available for pre-order from Amazon.comand other game retailers. It will be released January 28, 2014, in North America and January 31 in Europe. The price will be around $60 US.

  1. My most hated game of all time, which has crushed pretty much all my hopes for the series! :( I'm just hoping some indie developer will soon make a spiritual successor to the classic Tomb Raider games. Oh, how I miss the 90s, where action-adventure games where action-ADVENTURE games! A journey that takes you through a lot of different environments, with each level having its own unique elements for both visuals and game-play, highly explorable with complex level design and clever back-tracking mechanics, puzzles that are actually interesting, nasty traps and platforming situations, lots of variety and challenge, with some little combat thrown into the mix to break up the pace and create some surprise elements. Now, just look at this trailer for this game that abuses the title of "Tomb Raider": It tries to wow the masses by butting all the ill blood/gore/violence/brutality to the forefront, with absolutely no sign of mystery and discovery, upon which Tomb Raider was originally built. It's just extremely sad and almost makes me want to cry! It's not just about Tomb Raider, but how game development has moved towards the wrong direction. There's a lot more that I could say about this topic, but I think, I just leave it at this for now.

  2. I abandoned what I was going to say because Siavash Tazari pretty much said it for me. Except that as an 'old hippy', (getting on for 63); even in TR1 I was never comfortable 'killing anything' but it was 'just a game' as they say!
For me the last TR/Croft game was AOD. After that the GFX got better but I just didn't enjoy playing it any-more. I got through Legend but I've only played Anniversary and Underworld part the way through!

As for the 'reboot'; It's not Lara! Her daughter maybe? But not her and it just looks like a bog standard shoot'em up kind of game. If I wanted to play a game like that I'd buy COD.

As a final thought; If anyone wants to to play 3D a non violent puzzle/adventure game that’s free online, check out URU live and for the old school games that started it; look for 'Myst'.

    1. Good to see a comment that references my comment! :D I actually thought no one would read my comment. :P

jcl3rd, I also never liked the killing in any of the Tomb Raider games, but I understand that a lot of people want that part. But the classic Tomb Raider games had also so much more going for them that the killing only played a small part. The exception to this is Tomb Raider II, which is overloaded with enemies, but compared to this new game, it was nothing!

Anyway, although my 2 by far favorite Tomb Raider games are TR III (Adventures of Lara Croft) and TR The last Revelation, I think that the Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider games prior to this new one were great as well; even Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. I probably even consider Tomb Raider Anniversary a more enjoyable game than the original TR, even though there are still some things that I like better in the original. Overall, for me, the Core Design Tomb Raider games were the definitive Tomb Raider games as well, but even if Crystal Dynamics had continued the same way they used to up until Guardian of Light, I had had been happy. But with this new abuse of the "Tomb Raider" title, Crystal Dynamics has insulted the franchise and the long-time Tomb-Raider-fans, and I just can't get over that!

Yeah, Myst is great! Unfortunately, I have only played Myst IV Revelation, but I've loved it!

  4. As a die-hard fan of the genre i was surprised I didn't play it some time recently.I loved the ones on Ps2 and now Ps4.The story is simply refreshing really pleasant to see it being very suspenseful and thrilling,The character development is a huge part of the story and is told pleasantly,However I being frustrating that treasure hunting was genuinely just to satisfy the fans and did not feel "Adventure" it concentrated on survival which was splendidly executed however shouldn't we think about treasures and what is the core of this kind of diversion yet it was there and it was great yet could be better,Gameplay is extremely fun and traversing is a considerable measure of fun ,the gunplay is great and the epic moments were astounding,Graphics are stunning simply stunning and lighting is really rich and brilliant.

  5. I'm really annoyed about how Lara is portrayed in this video. Survivor (My word for this game) had some great puzzles in it, and was the most open world of any of the Tomb Raider games that I have played. But the developers decided that instead of showing that, they're going to show Lara shooting a man in the head with a machine gun. Really?

    2. I know, right? The emphasis on violence in general is kind of gross to me. I don't mind a little combat and death by traps, but I prefer the stylized slightly comical violence of the older games. Not to mention the blood in this one looks like half-set jell-o. Ick.

  6. The lovely visual design is breathtaking to the point that I consistently ended up gazing at the scenery as opposed to pushing forward.Tomb Raider is a great reinvention of this continuing franchise that made me enthusiastic to see where Lara goes in her future.
