30-Day Tomb Raider Challenge Day 7: Speedruns and Time Trials

Today's question comes from brooklynspider, birchyboy and me. We want to know how fast you raiders really are. Have you completed any time trials or speedruns? If so, tell us about your accomplishments. If you recorded the run(s), feel free to link to videos if you like. What's your fastest time through any level or complete game?

If you don't do speedruns or time trials, why not?

  1. I have the utmost admiration for speedrunners, but I'm not a fast player myself. I'm not that coordinated and I make a lot of mistakes, so I prefer to take my time, explore everywhere, and save often. That said, I've done the time trials in the PC versions of Legend and Anniversary, but I used glitches and shortcuts where I could, and I haven't bothered to do them all on the Xbox. It's just not fun for me.

  2. I used to do that sort of thing a bit with the Core games. I did the Lost Valley without killing any dinosaurs.

  3. I really like it when I finish a level quickly but almost always need to use glitches. I really can't go that fast. One of the fastest, non glitched run I have done is River Gangies in Tomb Raider 3. I think I did it in 4 minutes which I am quite proud of. Whenever I replay a Tomb Raider game I always have a goal in it. Sometimes I try to go as fast as I can which is always my favourite and to find all the secrets. I'm just not very good at speedrunning myself.

  4. Tried speed runs for TR1 and TR2 and the time
trials in Legend. I would say it's more work
than fun for me personally but really enjoy
some of very impressive and totally outrageous speed runs I've seen on You Tube.

  5. i have to say that i am the same as stella. i do find many speedrunners truly amazing but when i try i start to panic and then all the worst things imaginable happen. i tried a time trial on legend once and failed horribly completein g the level about 45 minutes after the time trial was over. couldnt believe it. so from then on i dont bother with speedruns or time trials. i even end up dieing when i know something is going to happen. like if something is attacking me and i didnt know it was there i wil swan dive off wherever i am on the game and i will restart the level. i defo think that taking my time is better for me and for lara in the long run.

oh and that video ^^^ that was really glitched none of those things happen on my game. lara going through things.

  7. I did them on Legend and some on Anniversary. I am always impressed with speedrunners but it's not my thing. I just like to enjoy the level and get all the secrets. On some early levels (Caves, Lost Valley, The Great Wall etc) I might try to do it fast but I always add a goal like get all the secrets,

  8. I was never keen on speedruns. I remember I tried to do a time trial on Anniversary, but it was too hard for me. I like to finish the level fast, but because of that speed, I always make a lot of mistakes.

  9. I only do speedruns AFTER I've cracked the challenge of finding all the secrets or artifacts. Just doing it all again doesn't excite me much. The challenge becomes doing the run as fast as possible without any mistakes and ignoring the prizes.

Speedruns need both patience & practice. If you give up a level after only 3 or 4 tries, you won't get the 'YES!' factor.

I can do a run 20 -30 times and screw somthing up in all of them, but when I get one right, it's like a golfer's hole-in-one :-)

  10. I absolutely despise speedruns. There are so many players out there (like Stella and myself) that aren't particularly coordinated and we are penalized for that. I'd much rather prefer bonuses given through secrets or gameplay choices which everyone has the ability to get if they bother to.

That being said, I am so impressed by the speedrunners who do it out of fun and skill.

  11. I dont like speedruns, never done one in the Core games. But i like time trials, specially if there is a bonus for beating it. I completed all the time trials in Legend and Anniversary because I wanted all the extra content. And I cant finish a TR game leaving something to tick :P

  12. Props to the people who do them, but the games are difficult enough, haha. I like to make mistakes, because the more I have to go through a certain section, the more fluid I DO get with that level.

  13. I've never done a speed run of TR1 - 6, I'm good but not THAT good :p I did the time trials in TR7 and TRA purely for achievements and extras :) Done all the speed demon achievement in TR8 but still trying to do the 2 speed achievements in Lara's Shadow...they're the only 2 TR achievements I haven't got.

  14. I freeze up on anything timed, so no, I've never done one.
