Tomb Raider Level Editor Beginners' Group

If you've been wanting to create your own playable levels using the Tomb Raider Level Editor but didn't know where to start, there is now a beginners' group on Facebook that can help. My friend Eldin, a long-time TR fan, recently started this online community, which is open to anyone with an interest in learning to use the editing tools.

Tomb Raider Level Editor

To join the group you'll need a Facebook account. Then just visit the Tomb Raider Level Editor group page and click the 'Ask to Join Group' link. If you have questions before joining, you can contact Eldin and the other members through my page.

The Tomb Raider Level Editor is based on the Last Revelation game engine and was released in 2000 along with the Tomb Raider Chronicles game. Since then, players have designed thousands of levels and created dozens of tools and utilities to make level creation easier and more interesting.

George Maciver, webmaster of Skribblers.com, wrote a great introduction to the editor for this blog a while back. You can find it here: "Living in Lara's World: The Tomb Raider Level Editor".

If you don't own the original Chronicles game—or have the PlayStation version, which does not include the editor—it's available as a free download for Windows or Macintosh. You can find the program, instruction manual and links to other Level Editor resources on my Tomb Raider Level Editor page.

  1. That is so sweet. Sadly, I'm starting up a business right now and I don't have time to be having a blast making TR levels. Now I'm sad. ;_;

  2. For YEARS i have wanted to make a level-recreation of my home city. i attempted once to use the editor program and i realized that it is a tremendous undertaking. It was clearly going to take me a very long time to become fluent in using the program. Maybe some day.

    Do you play the downloadable levels online? i don't play them nearly as much as i used to, but i do make it a point every Christmas to play all the holiday levels. Some of the user-built levels are amazing--some nearly every bit as good as the published games.

  3. WOOH! Now I can FINALLY learn how to use that gosh darn thing! I can't wait to build levels! I wish I could be fluent with it, and can build MASSIVE levels! Sorry if I seem hyper! I pulled an all nighter and drank 12 cups of coffee in the process.

  5. Maybe a stupid question, but I'm unfamiliar w/ the L.E. and don't actually have the software. Do you actually need the L.E. software to play a fan made level/game, or can you play them w/o it?

  6. Yes, you do need the level editor program to play custom levels. It's a free download, though, available on my site and various others. Here's a good introductory tutorial for setting up the program and playing levels:

    You can also find more info (and more sites with levels to download) on my TRLE page: http://tombraiders.net/stella/trle.html.

    Good luck and raid on!

  7. Re:The Crystal Empire is Anonymous.

    Perhaps only Anonymous can survive the many traps in Lara's World?

    Perhaps only Anonymous is Out of Time to build timeless Computer to stay in Lara's World?

    Perhaps only Anonymous will receive anonymous resources to upgrade from Level Editor to Matrix Editor?
